The Light Foot organization was established in the late 2000s by native Idahoan Jeffrey “Stan” Stankiewicz, who authored the foundational Light Foot Standards and Principles.

These written standards provide a solid foundation for training, organization, and preparedness, emphasizing community readiness, coordination, and adherence to applicable legal requirements.

The Light Foot framework operates within the unorganized militia concept recognized in United States constitutional and state laws, while maintaining a strong focus on responsibility and lawful conduct.

Today, Light Foot–affiliated units exist in more than fifteen states, supporting interoperability during training activities and, when necessary, during state or national emergency situations.

The term Light Foot draws inspiration from historical light infantry units, including those of the British Army, which emphasized mobility, adaptability, and readiness. Within the modern Light Foot framework, this heritage is reflected through standards-based training and a focus on preparedness efforts around four core pillars, rather than through any formal military affiliation.

Core Pillars

  • Communications — ensuring reliable information flow, coordination, and situational awareness across teams and activities

  • Medical Readiness — developing lifesaving skills and medical response capabilities to support timely care in emergencies

  • Operations & Response — preparing for effective, coordinated action during emergencies or community support efforts

  • Sustainment — maintaining the resources, logistics, and planning needed to sustain food, shelter, and essential supplies

The Light Foot Militia represents Kootenai County, designated as Idaho’s 55th county, together with Boundary County (21st), and Bonner County (17th). These county designations reflect Idaho’s historical order of formation and provide an organizational framework for regional identity, coordination, and structure.

In keeping with the broader Light Foot structure, unit designations are tied to geographic or historical identifiers. For example, the 43rd Field Force reflects Idaho’s position as the 43rd state to join the Union. This approach reinforces shared identity while preserving a decentralized, community-based structure.

The 55th Light Foot Battalion is committed to serving the local community through community events, disaster preparedness efforts, and response support when appropriate. Members prioritize responsible readiness, skill development, and personal growth, with the understanding that civil defense preparation is approached thoughtfully and only when necessary.

The unit operates fully within applicable state and federal laws and maintains a positive, cooperative relationship with local authorities and community partners.
